We need to change the way of production and how we think about growth.

In the last 200 years, we have seen a phenomenal progress of humanity: never before have so many people lived so well, so long and with so many comforts. But the base of this growth is an invasive and extractive production logic that historically did not take into account (or not as it should) people, nor the environment.

It might happen that in the post-pandemic life, capital will be more open to listen to proposals that solve these problems: the great problems humanity faces. But the key is not only to appeal to that sensitivity. We rather have to change our approach from the proposal side. Proposals must be attractive to capital: they have to consider good investment returns.
There are many examples of companies that are already doing it successfully, but it is not enough. The Orsted company, the largest energy company in Denmark, started a process of divestment from fossil fuels and investment in renewables. The value of its shares has almost tripled in the last three years. The Dutch multinational DSM specialized in health, food and materials, aims to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030, which could generate annual income of more than USD 1 billion. The well-known company Danone chooses to bet on healthy (and sustainable) eating to lead the market.

All the startups in our portfolio comply with that formulation of finding attractive models for capital while aiming to solve some of the great problems of humanity. Here are a few examples. Beeflow’s business is to improve crop yields with bees: every dollar of growth of the company is another step in sustainable crop production. Stämm is developing the next generation of bioreactors that will allow the democratization of biological production. Tomorrow Foods seeks to bring alternative proteins that will reduce the environmental impact given by livestock production. Michroma intends to change the dye industry, making dyes 100% natural and knowing that it can only be successful if its dyes work and are more convenient in the cost-benefit equation. Alytix develops alternatives to antibiotics: each product that is put on the market is one less antibiotic that we use and that reduces the enormous problem of resistant bacteria, produced by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
It is possible. There are hundreds, thousands of cases, but we need many more, and that will only happen with more people committed to leading those processes.

Entrepreneurs looking for projects that already have this impact logic can explore how their energy and business knowledge can complement those ideas. This requires a lot of patience and compassion, because along the way they will meet people who see the world in a different way. For those who do not know about business but do have technical or scientific knowledge that can solve great problems of humanity, or a view that already includes this social and environmental sensitivity, they can join business profiles that do have an idea, enduring the discomfort of new languages, new cultures and new processes. And for those who are already in entrepreneurial teams which have that complement: it is time to think big. Think of the world as a market. Think that the measure of impact will be related to the size of your company.

There are endless opportunities. We need to transform the health system. We need to transform how we produce food, because we need healthy and sustainable food. We need to transform how we live with the environment, how we take care of water, how we restore our atmosphere and soils, how we transport ourselves, how we produce energy and how we produce materials, and much more.
And not only do we need to do that in the current state of the capitalist system, but also in the growth horizon that the world requires, so that the entire population can enjoy material well-being in accordance with the possibilities that the world can offer us.Today we have significant knowledge to produce what is necessary so that the entire world population can access material well-being, but we have no way of conveying it, because many proposals that can solve big problems do not consider that they have to be good business to grow and generate impact and, consequently, they fall by the wayside.

We are going to be moved, excited and transformed individually in this new pandemic scenario, but when everything is over, we run the risk of forgetting ourselves and re-accommodating ourselves to consume and live our lives as is most comfortable for us.This profound change in humanity is going to come, we are already on that path. Meanwhile we need to transform supply, because transforming from demand is going to take much longer. There are endless opportunities. It is time to get out of our comfort zone and change our focus.
